What is this ad really saying?

The Serpentine One and I had a discussion about this ad from this morning's Globe and Mail:

I thought the subtext was, "Please feel free to have an Asian call girl join you in your room."

The Serpentine One's suggestion was that the subtext is: "We will be pleased to find an Asian call girl for you if you stay with us."

I love the tag, "Intimate connection".

To give them their due, the real target for these ads is probably professional couples whose lives are so busy that their sex lives have gone to pot. Sneak away to the hotel for a weekend where you don't have to think about work, loading the dishwasher or even making the bed and you can rekindle your, ah "romance" a bit.

That said, I'd have shot the ad the other way with a very clear focus shot of a man in a suit but not showing his face and the woman slightly out of focus partly dressed in front of a mirror. An ad like this should do two things, it should allow the reader to visualize themselves in that room and situation and encourage a little bit of narcissism in both men and women. You can't do the second if you don't do the first and, seriously, how many women can look at that woman and think, "Yeah, I could look like that?" Less than one percent would be my guess.

The Loden is a luxury hotel. Their website is currently offering a special starting at $299 a night. (I'm assuming that does not include extras.)

  1. I agree that its targeted to professional couples, but the way they present it is appealing to their fantasies. Probably more the man's fantasy, but what its saying to both is that they can be like this if they come to our hotel.
