Guilt

The other big difference between stories the way Austen tells them and the way we do, is the importance of guilt. For us, guilt is a fraud. It is a manipulative trick played on us by society and bad people within society. For any Austen heroine, guilt is a serious moral revelation that holds the key to liberation.

The bad qualities we assign to guilt, Austen assigns to shame. But even shame isn't an altogether bad thing in Austen's world.
