The first of two ...

... perspectives on Vatican 2.

Vatican 2 is one of those things that everyone cites and nobody reads. The next time you hear someone say that Vatican 2 mandates such and such a thing, ask them to show where in the Vatican 2 documents it says such a thing. And don't let them get away with just name a document. Tell them you want to read the paragraph where the thing is said.

A warning, they just may start yelling at you at that point. Because the sad truth is that what most fans of Vatican 2 claim to find in it is mostly things they project into the documents but are not actually there. Nowhere is this clearer than in the sorts of liturgical reform we saw here in North America. Churches were desecrated based on principles that simply are not found in the documents.

And the chickens are now coming home to roost as reformers try to defend the indefensible in the ICEL translation. No matter where you stand on reform, the plain fact is that the ICEL translation from the 1970s was not a translation at all but a deliberate attempt to distort.

Anyway, the point here was to draw your attention to a very promising series on Vatican 2 that begins here. I've read the introduction only so far but, based on that, I'd say this guy understands what he is talking about.
