"Charles II, himself a crypto-Catholic libertine, was reputedly appalled by James's folly in matters of religion and sex: 'My brother will lose his kingdom by his bigotry, and his soul for a lot of ugly trollops.'" John Mullan

A final note about Didion
She is a fantastic writer, especially in The White Album written when she was at the height of her powers. I wouldn't want anyone to think I don't recommend reading her. The title essay, the one on James Pike and the one on the Women's movement are particularly brilliant. OTOH, readers would lose nothing by skipping the entire penultimate section of the book called "Sojourns" where Didion is at her narcissistic worst.
