Monotheism

James McGrath asks some very good questions about the challenges of telling a story around monotheism. It's worth reading the whole thing:

Exploring Our Matrix: Van Helsing Theology

He talks about how and why absolute monotheism is a very hard thing to talk about especially in story form.

He doesn't mention Islam but it is the perfect example. On the face of it, for example, Islam seems about as monotheistic as you can get but the monotheism is not nearly as pure as advertised when you start to look around the Koran. The biggest problem by far is the Prophet himself. I think that, ironically, it is the logical purity of Islam that makes it far less credible to me than Christianity's considerably messier picture.

Anyway, read what the good professor has to say, it's worth your time.

BTW: at the end of the comments McGrath asks, "Wasn't there a movie once upon a time called 'The Left Hand of God'?"

Yes, there was.
