Grumbling

Benedict [the monk, not the current pope] regards grumbling as a serious sin; not less than twelve times murmuratio is named in the Rule as a serious threat to the community.
My goal for 2013 is to withdraw further (but not completely for that cannot be done) from the world. It is better to bluntly and frankly oppose the indefensible state of our culture than to sit around grumbling about it.

The quote is from The Rule of Benedict for Beginners by Wil Derske. I am not an expert on Benedictine discipline, so I can't say how accurate Derske's interpretation is. On the whole it strikes me as a little too worldly. But Benedict himself is solid gold.
