Lenten reflection: Ite missa est (5)

Dusty Rose and pink

Today is Laetere Sunday. The priest will wear pink vestments for today's mass.

I always wear a pink tie.

There are those who will insist on calling them "Rose Vestments" and there is a certain sense to that; we are, after all, trying to make a serious point and saying, "The priest will be wearing pink clothes," could take away from that.

But pink and rose are not two different colours any more than "aquamarine and blue" are two different colours or "lime and green" are two different colours. "Rose" is what you might say to the person making the vestment to make sure they get the right pink.

But to say that Rose is not Pink is to lie. It is also a lie to say that "Go in peace" is an adequate translation of "Ite missa est".
