Crypto-Catholic Libertine

"Charles II, himself a crypto-Catholic libertine, was reputedly appalled by James's folly in matters of religion and sex: 'My brother will lose his kingdom by his bigotry, and his soul for a lot of ugly trollops.'" John Mullan

What are they selling? A reading list

A few things that I think are related to this morning's Womanly Virtue post.

A great or notorious, depending on your point of view, Katie Roiphe piece on male novelists,
A Catholic woman's response to Roiphe,
A piece by the suicide David Foster Wallace on John Updike,
Two previous pieces of mine about marketing alcohol  and marketing miniskirts to women,
A previous piece of mine on whether women are more likely to put out for guys who drive Porsches, and
Recent research that suggests that women find sexist men attractive for casual sex.

Over-sentimentality, over-softness, in fact washiness and mushiness are the great dangers of this age and of this people. Unless we keep the barbarian virtues, gaining the civilized ones will be of little avail. –Theodore Roosevelt
